All About Us
Bayhead is located on the scenic seacoast region of New Hampshire. (directions) Our 50,000 square foot building is packed with stock material handling products we manufacture to allow quick shipping on our most popular items. Many of our carts and trucks, boxes, and pallet containers are drop-shipped directly to the end user from our plant for our national catalog customers (see below).

History

Bayhead started as a division of Spaulding Fibre in the early 1900's. Spaulding manufactured sheets of fibre material, a pulp composite created with heat and pressure. The material was used for a variety of products including formed athletic protection, helmets, electrical insulators, etc. Scrap material was initially made into fabricated boxes & bins.

Eventually, a material handling division was set up which fabricated a variety of carts and containers in fibre material as an alternative to the steel or wood containers then in wide use. Spaulding expanded into plastic molding in the late 50's, entering into early rotational molding using the "open flame" method. In this process, molds were spun directly over open flames as the heat source. The process was slow and hard to control, but the division was heading in a new direction.

By the late 60's, new molding equipment improved the efficiency of the process. In 1973, the material handling division was made into an independent company, operating under our current name. Bayhead now operates as a small, woman-owned corporation under private ownership. We still offer several Spaulding-introduced products from the early 1900's.

Our fibre megaphones were made famous by Rudy Vallee in the 1920's. He used a Spaulding megaphone while leading the Connecticut Yankees orchestra, singing "My Time is Your Time" through the megaphone. Mr. Vallee and his soon-to-be inseparable megaphone went on to achieve considerable success. The same megaphones are still made and sold today, used by cheerleaders throughout the country. We also still produce our fibre & leather replacement chairseats. Pressed from dies made at the turn of the century, the Bayhead Chairseat is sold through many restoration catalogs.
